The book opens with “Every Little Hurricane” which describes the turbulent relationship of Victor’s parents,and the atmosphere of the reservation. It’s great to show that to students. At the same time, Alexie brings an extreme level of humor and compassion to these characters, making their hardships bearable to the reader. I had enjoyed it well enough—Alexie was consistently funny and thought provoking through the entire collection—but it kn until afterwards, in a book signing and meet and greet that I actually got it.
